What if tomorrow everyone's car disappeared?

Director Ross Ching masterfully used stop-motion photography and a few clever tricks to remove all of the cars from L.A.'s freeways in this haunting video. There are many things that I appreciate about his video.
  1. It's a statement that provokes thought. Like all art that is successful, the thoughts that stir in you may be linked to the mission of the artist but still unique based on the lens that you personally view it through. This video causes me to question what we're missing as we pack our lives with things and rush from one to the next without stopping to take a look around? What do we lose by removing solitude from our lives? How does it impact our minds and the development of thought when we're constantly surrounded by people, devices and things that are competing for our attention? Are we missing what God my be saying because of the layers of static it has to filter through?
  2. Ching's use of techniques and Stop-motion photography is amazing and artistic. Better than that, he actually shares his vision and secrets on his website so that you can learn from his experience. I love artists that give others an opportunity to see what they see and a shot at using their tools to learn with a head start.
  3. A simple change in our surroundings can open up new worlds of perception. By removing of altering one element (cars, that we often mentally ignore) the way we view everything changes. Cement overpasses become landscapes. Bridges become elaborate sculptures and the intersection of nature and man-made becomes seamless and complementary.

I welcome your thoughts on this.

Happy Birthday Brittany Bennett

Geek out THEN Freak out!

Hubble Ultra Deep Field in 3D

Scientists point the Hubble telescope to a dark spot in the sky and leave the shutter open for 11 days. What they found will clobber your brain if you can get your mind around it. God's creation freaks me out and is awe-inspiring in a way that's a little scary.

Erik Martin, who is living with liver cancer, has always wanted to be a superhero. On Thursday, the regional chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation granted him that wish with an elaborate event that involved hundreds of volunteers in Bellevue and Seattle.
